Laurent Giles Design

Roomy small sailing cruiser with good sailing performance, shallow draft and capable of taking the ground. GRP hull and deck with GRP spade rudder and self-draining cockpit.

Hull Colour: Professional brush painted in dark blue Awlgrip (approx. 2012), colour still good but some scratches & marks, original moulded cream Gel coat coach roof with painted non slip (non-slip could do with re-painting).

Engine: Yanmar 1 GM installed new in 2004, raw water cooled, with original owner’s handbook. 

Stern Gland: Converted to dual Lip MMP rubber seal type self-bleeding fitted 2020.

Tiller Steering: Modified arrangement with rudder shaft extension and support bearing to allow horizontal tiller allowing easier control by tiller extension from cockpit coamings and improved turning circle (full 180 degrees lock to lock).  Original Westerly laminated swept tiller included.

Sails and Rig:

Main Sail (2016) is a cross-cut loose footed modern design mainsail by Kemps (Performance Cruise) in high-tensity polyester,3 sets of slab reefing points and tapered dynaflex battens.

            Main sail boom cover (2017), loose over boom cover with clip fasteners along base.

95% Headsail (2015) by Kemps in Portland Premium 6.5 high-tensity polyester with UV protective strip in white.  Retains shape with a couple of rolls and makes a good working jib.

            150% Genoa (unknown year & make), old & repaired, but still shapes well in light airs.        

Main sheet traveller: Harken roller traveller fitted across stern of boat.

Most control lines led back to cockpit with jamming cleats and Lewmar  self-tailing winch on coachroof.

Roller Furling: Furlex 50S system and forestay fitted new 2012.

Boom replaced in 2015 with a Z-Spars Z162 with internal control lines for outhaul and 2 reefs with matching stainless steel gooseneck.

Standing Rigging: All 10 years plus (claimed to be replaced in 2012) in good condition. Back stay modified and replaced (2015) with two new adjustable bottle screws.

Blue spray hood and frame mounted on coachroof and matching dodgers with ships name.

Instruments and Navigation

Plastimo steering compass

NAVMAN 7100 VHF with DSC functions (not currently fitted) with mast head Metz Manta Marine VHF Antenna (2015).

Everymore SA320 GPS receiver (not currently connected) fitted on rear pulpit to connect to VHF & Yeoman Chart Plotter (not currently connected).

Instrumentation: Raymarine i40 system (approx. 2015) providing log & depth with removable paddle wheel, separate depth transducer and combined instrument display in cockpit.

NASA EX-1 exhaust temperature monitor fitted in cabin.

Clipper Wind System with mast head anemometer.

Mast head Tri-colour converted to LED with all round white (also LED) anchor light below it, part way is the white steaming light and deck light combination. Wiring in the mast was replaced with tinned copper.

Electrics

Twin Batteries, Numax 86 amp/hrs 1000 amp CCA (approx 2013) fitted under port quarter berth wired through change over switch charged from engine 30 amp / hr alternator.

Accommodation

The saloon is a dinette L-shaped layout to starboard with large saloon table used as infill to make a double berth, and a large quarter berth to port, all cushions and seat backs are matching dual density foam fabric covered (approximately 10 years old).  Opposite the dinette is the galley unit that provides a sink / work surface and a gimbled stainless two burner Bainbridge Neptune 4500 gas hob with a grill. The Forecabin has two separate berths with matching shaped dual foam fabric covered berth cushions

There is a warm air diesel heater (2022) with a single warm air outlet into the main cabin in front of the steps and additionally there is Catalytic gas heater plumbed into boats LPG system and installed under the galley.

Separate enclosed heads compartment to starboard between the main cabin and fore cabin with a Jabsco toilet (currently not fitted), which connects to original bronze Blakes sea cocks for inlet and outlet. Opposite the heads compartment is a small hanging area with a round opening porthole. 

General.

Replacement twin roller fairlead with captive locking pin.

Original Danforth anchor that stows on pulpit connecting using Kong swivel connecting link to approx. 20 m of 6 mm chain (could do with replacing), chain stows through relocating Hawsepipe to improve stowing.

Gas installation updated & fitted with modern regulator by gas engineer and had a safety certificate issued (2020) now OOD.

            Coastal flare pack (mostly OOD).

Seago 4 man Liferaft 2012 (OOD for service 2015).

            (Full inventory including boathook, fenders etc on request).

Special Remarks

Bilge Keels:  The fibreglass starboard stub keel was found to be cracked, bilge keel was removed and hull repaired using Epoxy material and strengthened.  The port keel was also removed and strengthening plywood (19 mm) stiffeners laminated into both stub keels to reinforce as required on both sides and then hull keel joints re-seated with Sika 292i (works completed 2017/18).  The method of repair was agreed with a surveyor anecdotally to be approved and there have been no leaks since. Starboard keel ground off entirely and all rust pits and damage repaired and faired with epoxy and then epoxy painted (2022).  Port keel ground off and painted with zinc primer.

Hull:  Build-up of antifouling scraped off entire hull in 2022 and hull primed and painted with self-eroding International Micron. 

Windows: Main cabin windows are toughened glass and were removed and the frames refurbished in 2014. 

Stainless steel water tank was cut out of the interior mouldings and all seams re-welded refitted, the interior mouldings were re-instated and compartment filled around the tank with 2-part foam.  However tank has not currently been re-connected.

Currently ashore on yard trailer (mast down) and stored under cover near Weir Quay but can be supplied mast raised and rigged, antifouled, engine serviced, sails on, launched & on temporary mooring ready to be sailed / motored away.

Work Needed:

Includes improving the wiring and connecting the instruments and navigation lights including fitting the LED stern light, refitting the VHF.  Reconnecting the fresh water tank to the deck filler and sink via the pump. Fitting a drain tank or skin fitting & seacock for the sink drain.

Install Carbon monoxide alarm.

Main cabin has the head-lining in place which is clean and serviceable but could do with replacing, the forecabin has had the head-lining removed and is currently paint white.

General painting and varnishing etc.

Re-installing the Jabsco toilet.

Installing a bilge pump.

Windex unfortunately snapped off before launch last year and a replacement one is recommended.

Design & build

Designed by Charles Nicholson, the Nicholson 26 has become a classic masthead sloop, representing a good compromise between sailing performance and cruising comfort.  Tumbleweed was built by Camper & Nicholson in 1967 of GRP.  She has a long deep keel, tiller steering and 6’ headroom in the saloon.
