Cruising

The River Tamar and Plymouth Sound lie at the heart of the West Country cruising grounds. For the small boat skipper or novice cruiser, the Sound and it’s main tributaries the Tamar, Tavy and Lynher rivers all offer sheltered cruising in interesting, historic and beautiful surroundings. Less than an hour’s sail away from the Plymouth breakwater, the River Yealm and the twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo offer an ideal destination for a first overnight foray outside the Sound.

For more experienced skippers, the world, quite literally, is their oyster. In the last couple of years, club members leaving our waters have headed off around Great Britain, south to Brittany, Spain and the Mediterranean and even across the Atlantic to South America and Cape Horn.

But for most of our members, it is the West Country cruising opportunities that are the biggest attraction to being based here on the Tamar.

Fowey, the Fal estuary, the Helford river and the Isles of Scilly are all within easy reach to the west. Salcombe, the Dart estuary, Torbay, the Exe estuary and Teignmouth all lie within a day’s sail to the east. And of course to the south lie the Channel Islands and the north coast of France.

Members are encouraged to join our WhatsApp group Lets go sailing WQSC which was created to enhance opportunities to sail together and to meet up on the water. If you are interested, please contact Mark Reynolds at mooringholderswqsc@gmail.com or Doug Hinge at doughinge57@gmail.com either of whom will add you to the group.
