Mooring Barge – winter work complete

Our mooring barge was taken to the Hub Club boat park this year to have its winter refurbishment tasks carried out.

John King very kindly welded us up a new steering console.

A new foredeck was fitted.

The barge’s new name “Pickle” being applied to her cleaned hull.

Throughout it all, Matthew Newton’s faithful hound, Dappy kept charge of the work.

And finally, last Monday, the completed barge was floated off her trailer at the public slipway and returned to her mooring. Afloat now and ready for the winter mooring inspections!

Last Friday Evening Dinghy Sail

Friday evening 29th September marked the final club dinghy sailing session of the year. The nights are drawing in and it’s now time to stop our dinghy sessions for 2023. It’s been a great year and our dinghy sailors have grown in number with plenty more beginners learning to sail with us.

However, there will be a chance to relive some of the best of this year’s dinghy fun at next Friday’s Jelly & Ice-cream Party at Bere Ferrers St Andrews Parish Hall.

Booking is needed – contact Steve Kirby to put your name down for this – steve@kirbysdomain.co.uk

End of Season Sail to the Yealm

Last weekend 16-17 September, six of our cruisers and one guest yacht, a Moody 42 named “Seize The Day” made their way to the upper pontoon on the Yealm River for the club’s End of Season Cruise.

The weather was really rather wet so, instead of setting off for our customary meal ashore, this time we gathered in two of the larger yachts to share supper together – made up from contributions from all the boats.

It was a very enjoyable evening and great to be out on the water together for one of the last cruises this year.

This is Tom Lamerton’s boat “Goyescas” the smallest of our merry bunch!

We gathered again for a lengthy breakfast and coffee together on “Seize The Day” before setting off home in a lively E wind for a sunny arrival back at Weir Quay.

Mooring Barge Ashore for her Autumn Refit

The club’s mooring maintenance barge has come ashore and been transported to the Hub Club boat park to have her own annual maintenance carried out.

For the first time, she was brought ashore and washed down at Weir Quay Boatyard.

She was then carefully driven along the shore road at Weir Quay, taking up quite a bit of space as she went!

This is one of her hulls before the mass of marine life and mud had been washed off.

What an Evening for the Dinghy Sailors!

Last Friday, 1st September, there was such an incredible sunset on the river as the club dinghies were being towed back to the slipway in the last of the evening light.

These photos were taken by Jack Hendry who had posted them on the Bere Alston and Peninsula General Info Facebook page. Jack has kindly given us permission to post his wonderful photos on our website.

A Great Day Out at The Sound

Yesterday, the club’s Dinghy Sailors were invited aboard our Cruisers to enjoy a trip to Plymouth Sound and anchor at Cawsand for lunch together.

The weather was sunny and the calm conditions allowed us to raft up and have a very sociable time. Most of us even braved the waters for a refreshing swim!

This was a rare and rewarding opportunity for all parts of the club to come together and share each other’s company.

Tony Walne is giving away his Family 14 Dinghy

Tony Walne would like to give away his sailing dinghy to any club member for a donation to club funds of £20.

It’s a Family 14 dinghy, a bit like a GP14. 14 feet long, fibreglass and gaff rigged. It rows well and has a bracket for an outboard.

Tony reports that it sails well and he has had lots of fun with it the Sound but it’s too heavy now for him to pull up the slipway on his own. So he would like someone else to enjoy it.

He says “It’s currently at the Hub Club boat park, upside down on the right-hand side at the top. There’s a launching trolley with it, some oars and 2 old scruffy covers. If someone wants it, they are welcome to turn it over and have a look (it’s heavy so you’ll need 2 or 3 people to do this). The trolley is collapsible, underneath the dinghy and you’ll need to re-assemble it. I have some of the bits here (sails, tiller, rudder).”

Go to the For Sale & Wanted page on the club website for more information.
